What Is Biomimetic Dentistry?

Mar 29, 2023

Biomimetic dentistry is a type of dental treatment that aims to mimic the natural structure and function of teeth. The word "biomimetic" comes from "bio," meaning life, and "mimetic," meaning to imitate.  So we're literally trying to copy nature.

Biomimetic dentistry focuses on preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible while repairing and restoring damaged or decayed teeth. The goal is to replicate the natural biomechanics of teeth, including their strength, flexibility, and resilience.

Some of the techniques used in biomimetic dentistry include minimally invasive cavity preparations, adhesive bonding of restorations, and the use of materials that closely mimic the natural tooth structure, such as composite resins and ceramics.

Biomimetic dentistry also involves a conservative approach to treating teeth, meaning that dentists try to avoid removing more of the tooth than necessary. This can help preserve the structural integrity of the tooth and reduce the likelihood of future problems.

Overall, biomimetic dentistry is focused on providing long-lasting, natural-looking results while preserving the natural tooth structure as much as possible.
